IF YOU ARE PLANNING TO GO TO GREECE FOR KITESURF YOU SHOULD DEFENETLY VISIT LIMNOS
Getting to Limnos, Greece
The easiest option is flying directly to Limnos airport (short code LXS) via Athens. There is no direct flight yet. Depending on the connections you might have to spend one night in Athens. There are quite a lot of good airbnb apartments close to the airport, which are easy to get to. Depending on the season those flights can be quite expensive though, so make sure to book ahead.
If you’re on a low budget or a bit more adventurous and want to explore a little bit more of Greece, there are two other options:
-
- You can quite often find the cheapest flights to Thessaloniki (short code SKG). I very often found flights for 100 Euros return in autumn. You can stay in Thessaloniki for a night if you want to explore the city. Or take the bus from Thessaloniki to Kavala which runs hourly. It takes around 2.5 hours or 2 hours with the express bus. In Kavala you can take the ferry to Limnos (Mirina), which will take you around 3.5 hours.
- Fly to Kavala (short code KVA) and take the ferry from there.
Lets Talk About Wind Conditions in Greece
Greece enjoys favorable wind conditions for kitesurfing, particularly during the summer months from May to September. The Aegean Sea, which includes popular kitesurfing destinations such as Limnos, Mykonos, Paros, and Naxos, offers a variety of wind patterns, making it suitable for kitesurfers of different skill levels. On Limnos, Paros and Naxos it’s even possible to kitesurf year-round.
The wind in this island during the summer months is the Meltemi, a strong and dry north-northwesterly wind that can blow consistently from 15 to 35 knots or even higher. The Meltemi winds are known for their reliability and can provide thrilling kitesurfing sessions from morning to evening for experienced riders who enjoy high-speed rides and jumps.
In addition to the Meltemi, in Limnos, Mykonos and Paros there are also local thermal winds that can provide excellent kitesurfing conditions in Greece. These winds are typically lighter and more variable, ranging from 10 to 20 knots, and can be found in areas with geographical features such as bays, and coves. These local winds can provide suitable conditions for beginners and intermediate riders to practice their skills and enjoy the sport.
Kitesurf spots on the islands
LETS START WITH LIMNOS
We are starting with Limnos because here is our kitesurf scholl and we will tell you the reasons why!
First reason is because in Limnos there is wind everyday in August which means when the most people are here they will enjoy kitesurfing everyday. But that is not all, in the off seasons when there is no wind on most of the other island, here in Limnos Greece you can enjoy kitesurfing everyday because of the constant breezing wind and termal one.
But let me tell you this: it’s probably Greece’s or maybe even Europe’s best kept secret when it comes to amazing kitesurf conditions: an uncrowded spot, good winds, beautiful nature and authentic culture. My only advise? Go there now before everyone else! Green, sandy and untouched nature with Caribbean-like turquoise water. This is probably the fastest way to describe this spot. As I mentioned above already, this spot offers anything from flatwater to (wind) waves, depending on which part of the bay you are kitesurfing in. Perfect for beginners with the huge standing area up to the pro riders who want to freestyle.
