After 17 years on the Ocean Rodeo lineup of boards, we decided it was time to return to the classic Mako. Was it possible to improve this legendary board? Over the last 12 months, Mako has been put to the full test!
The OR R&D team decided to do a complete physical overhaul of Mako and try something new. They tested the Mako shape in multiple 4-fin setups and found that the board lost its playful agile feel and became slower. New tail shape profiles were developed and tested, all of which yielded no new benefit. They even created prototypes with thick profiled surf rails shaped like a tuk tuk. No go!
The reality was that all of these modifications seemed to have a negative effect when we tested these “new Mako’s” against the original shape, taking away from the balanced, lively, hard to beat, choppy, smile-inducing ride that made the Mako an industry legend.
However, there was one improvement that made a positive difference. Make it lighter. Make the bending clearer. We reduced the weight of the board by replacing the classic S-glass with a new mineral-based composite. Now lighter, Mako has found a new versatility and liveliness that will be noticed and will appeal to even the most die-hard Mako fans.
As always, the Mako line offers freeride enthusiasts of all backgrounds a board suited to their riding style and size, and the wood core ensures your board will survive the rough coastal season “No Excuses”.
